What is Yoga?

Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India and aim to control and still the mind, recognizing a detached witness-consciousness. Furthermore  yoga contains various styles that combine physical postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and relaxation.

The practice goes beyond the physical poses that it is popularly associated with, especially in the West. It stands for the union of the mind and body with universal consciousness.

Regular practice enhances the mind and body by improving the practitioner’s ability to remain focused, calm, and mindful.  Such a union tends to neutralize ego-driven thoughts and behaviors, creating a sense of spiritual awakening.

Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, and whilst many different interpretations and styles have been developed, most tend to agree that the ultimate goal of yoga is to achieve liberation from suffering. Although each school or tradition of yoga has its own emphasis and practices, most focus on bringing together body, mind and breath as a means of altering energy or shifting consciousness

Yoga Classes Offered

Beginners Yoga

The beginner class series introduces the history of yoga, fundamental principles of alignment, and breath work. Students will be introduced to yoga postures through step-by-step verbal description and demonstration. Emphasis is placed on student understanding, safety, and stability within each pose. If you have never tried yoga this series is perfect for you and is designed to meet the needs of those new to yoga as well as those seeking continued understanding of basic yoga poses.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha refers to the physical practice of yoga. Classes focus on breathwork, postures, relaxation, and meditation. This is an excellent class to learn the foundations of yoga in a safe and supportive environment. Postures are held for an extended period to ensure proper alignment, and build strength and flexibility. Modifications are offered to accommodate all levels. No yoga experience required. Great for all age groups.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga is a restful practice that is all about slowing down and opening your body through passive stretching. If you take a restorative class, you may hardly move at all, doing just a few postures over the course of an hour. It is a practice of deep relaxation that emphasizes the meditative aspect of yoga—the union of body and mind. Through the use of props for support, many of the postures are held almost effortlessly. Great for all ages.
